Interior and Exterior Remodelling Process

Remodelling your house is an exciting prospect. It is the opportunity to reform your beloved home to align it with your vision for your dream home. Whether that involves an interior or exterior house remodel, the possibilities to improve the house are endless. However, the caveat to this is it can seem overwhelming. While it may be easy to envision the end result, the journey to reach your final destination is often a challenge.

Renovation Works has been successfully guiding home remodelling projects from start to finish for over 25 years. We’ve overseen the completion of renovations of all shapes and sizes, modern and grand, so when you partner with Renovation Works, you know your project is in experienced hands.

We want to shed light on the journey of remodelling and renovating your home. This way you can understand the entire process for making your dream into reality.

Consultation and Planning

A major key to the success of a renovation project, whether it is an internal or external home remodel, is getting the planning stage correct. Fail to prepare, prepare to fail. This is why Renovation offers a free initial consultation – so that we can get the wheels turning and understand the scope of your project. This initial consultation is often 6, 12, or even 18 months before the project begins. Renovation Works believes that it is never too early to start talking about your project as often it takes time to allow your ideas and expectations to be fully realised.

Once you’re ready to pull the trigger on your project you’ll meet with our design team and project manager. This step is all about taking these ideas and putting them on paper. The team will assess your home, provide expert insights into possible solutions, and take onboard your feedback to design and plan your remodel.

From here we will conduct a full site measure and obtain your property’s record from the council. We design a concept based on all your requirements from your design brief. We discuss preliminary costs while we further develop the design concepts. Once these have been signed off, we apply for all the necessary consents from the council and reach out to our interior and exterior remodelling contractors to obtain accurate prices to create a budget that suits you. Once this is all done, it’s time to get your project started!

Demolition

Out with the old, in with the new! The next step in your interior or exterior remodelling project is demolition. This process isn’t only about demolition, it is about debris disposal and most importantly, maintaining a safe site at all times.

The importance of a streamlined demolition process is often overlooked. We make sure that we approach the demolition systematically, disposing and removing debris like a well-oiled machine to maintain as clean a site as possible. Approaching a demolition stage without a plan is not only dangerous but also slows the entire project down.

Electrical, HVAC, and Plumbing

With the demolition stage complete, your home has been opened up for the “rough-in” process to start. This stage refers to any work that needs to be done beneath the floors or behind the walls. This may include installing ductwork for an HVAC system or installing new electrical work and plumbing.

It’s always recommended that during an exterior or interior remodel all electrical and plumbing is brought up to standard and future-proofed. Hopefully, it’s going to be a very long time before you’ll ever have the opportunity to do this again, so now is the time to have electrical and plumbing inspectors over to come look over these elements.

All this work needs to be done before we move onto any of the other steps. This is because the nature of rewiring or plumbing work requires any new fixtures, walls, or painting to be damaged to perform it.

Framing, Cladding, GIB Fixing, and Stopping

Now that you are content with your HVAC, electrical, and plumbing, it’s time to move on to the construction of your interior and/or exterior.

This is the point where we begin to construct and fabricate any framing that is required for your renovation. This is always an exciting point in the project because you can begin to see your design features begin to take shape. Once the framing is all done, we can begin to close off your walls. For exterior remodelling, this would be putting your chosen style of cladding in place. For interior remodelling, this is when we hang the GIB board and sand it to be smooth and ready for painting.

Painting

At this point, your house is a blank canvas ready to be painted. We use the best contractors in the industry to make sure that your paint is applied smoothly and flawlessly. Once everything has been painted, it’s time to get excited as we enter the final stages of your renovations. The icing on the cake, the features that you’ve been excited to see come into reality.

Fixtures and Cabinets

It’s at this point that people often see that their renovation is paying off. All your ideas from the design concepts from your initial consultation are put in place. Lighting, cabinetry, bathtubs, showers, toilets, and sinks all find their place in your newly renovated home.

Any new appliances you’ve had your heart set on for months (even years) are installed, and we enter the final sprint to the finish line.

Doors and Windows

We’re almost there now. At this stage, we can go ahead and install all the windows and hang the doors.

It is important to do the doors before the floors, especially carpet, to ensure that the doors are easily opened and closed once the floors are in. While not as important for tiles or laminate floors, it still doesn’t hurt to hang the doors first.

It’s time to clean up!

Remodelling is a messy affair. While we do everything we can to keep the mess to a minimum, the nature of cutting, sanding, and installing multiple materials means renovation dust tends to get in the unlikeliest places. Most of the debris should have been taken care of in the demolition phase, so think of this as cleaning the details of your freshly renovated home. A professional house clean will ensure that all nooks and crannies (such as air vents) are clean and dust- free.

Flooring

The final pieces of the puzzle – the floors! Floors are left till last to ensure that they don’t sustain any scrapes, nicks, or other damages caused by the renovating process. This is the time to lay down any carpet, tile, laminate or any other materials for your home remodel.

This is the final “big piece” in the renovation puzzle. At this point, the overall picture of your remodel should have revealed itself.

The Final Touches

Once all flooring is laid, we finish any minor work such as nailing up trim and finishes, door frames, and baseboards.

After these final touches have been finished, we meet with you to do a final look over of your beautiful new remodel. We make sure you’re happy with the results, and listen to any feedback you may have. We practise excellence and always take the time to make sure we’ve surpassed all your expectations.
